Red Bull: King of the Ring
May 2006
Sony BMG Parking Lot
“When the final bell tolled, only one B-boy remained standing at second edition Red Bull King of the Ring. Rockforce crew member and Oakland native Machine threw down in the ring and sent notice to the world that he is among North America’s best B-boys, defending the Head Hunter crews Nasty Ray from San Jose in the event’s final round. The two battled their way through a single-elimination, bracket-style field that featured an invite-only line-up of 32 elite b-boys from across North America”
-Press release of Red Bull King of the Ring 2, Toronto, On – May 22, 2006.
This event's size and scale has never been matched in the history of Canadian Bboying. Sony BMG parking lot was suddenly altered to a tented battleground for North America’s best bboys to do battle. By taking America's and Canada’s best dancers and placing them in a boxing ring surrounded by screaming fans, Red Bull created an atmosphere of energy and excitement this country has never seen!
Back to the Underground proudly took part in this event through consultation and advisement in matters regarding the specialized field of the B-boy Dance. Working behind the scenes and closely with Red Bull’s dynamic team, Back to the Underground provided the service of advising Red Bull about the complexities of the dance; aspects that deal with bboying such as assisting in the selection of the continent’s best dancers, problem shooting snags and hitches as they arise and maintaining the best interest of dancers that can make or break and event. Red Bull’s consistent efforts to make the event as authentic as possible and their desire to treat the artists in a manner they will not forget was understood and supported by the Back to the Underground staff. Being dancers and event holders ourselves, we offered them a unique perspective which complimented the Red Bull’s vision and culminated in the dopest event of 2006 in North America.
